THE RICH AND TEXTURED LIFE
QUILTS, DOLLS AND FIBERS
My quilts, wall hangings, dolls and handbags and other miscellaneous fiber goods are all original designs and are crafted from artisan textiles sourced from around the world- Japanese Shibori (tie and dye), Shisha mirror cloth with heavy and intricate embroidery, African Dutch process batiks, authentic artisan Kente and mudcloth, Indian block prints and hand-dyed fabrics (created by myself and other artisans).
Dolls
I have enjoyed dolls ever since I was a young girl. When I lived in California I discovered and became a member of a community of doll artists whose quest was to investigate the dollmaking traditions and symbolism of dolls of diverse cultures, in addition to fanciful and whimsical dolls. As a result I began to integrate the media and techniques that were a part of the arts, crafts and folk traditions of artisans in South Asia, Africa and Japan, while developing my own dollmaking language.
Handknits
My grandmother taught me to knit when I was 9 or 10. I briefly reconnected with it as a graduate student, proudly completing a summer sleeveless pullover-and then abandoning it once more for 20 or so years. In 2016 I became intrigued with the knitting craze and decided to give it a go once more- but this time my fixation was on socks and hats! I love playing around with the technical aspects of the medium, color and the idea of the handmade head or foot covering being a gesture of love.
